BUILDING STRONG, HEALTHY Relationships

Marriage and family are central to God’s plan, so we believe that it is especially important to understand how we can participate with Him in building strong, healthy families - starting with the dating process.

With this goal in mind, we want you to know about three of our favorite dating resources that we hope will be both encouraging and helpful in practical ways.

Building Strong, Healthy Marriages

A healthy family is built on a healthy marriage, and although there is no such thing as a perfect marriage, you can have a successful one. Successful marriages, however, don’t just happen! They grow out of a strong commitment to pleasing God.

When a husband and wife choose pleasing God as the highest priority of life, He faithfully pours out His grace in a special way upon that relationship. To that couple, He grants the grace to be everything He intends them to be; namely, an example of Christ and His love for His Church (Eph. 5:31).

For those who do have this desire to please God through a growing and committed marriage, we believe that the following areas of ministry will be of great help.

Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas
Scores of books have been written that offer guidance for building the marriage of your dreams. Yet, what if God’s primary intent for your marriage isn’t to make you happy . . . but holy? And, what if your relationship isn’t as much about you and your spouse as it is about you and God? In this popular bestselling book, Gary Thomas uncovers how your marriage can become a doorway to a closer walk with God and each other.
Marriage, The Way it’s Made to Be by Ken Ortize
Pastor Ken Ortize of Calvary Chapel of Spokane, Washington, explores some of the most commonly asked questions regarding marriage, including whether or not we all have a “right” to be happy. Pastor Ken examines various seasons in marriage, and explores God’s word on the subject of communication, happiness, and love. In Marriage: The Way It’s Made to Be, Ken Ortize has set out to provide clear, simple, down to earth insights in understanding God’s plan and purpose for marriage in today’s world. If husbands and wives simply treated their spouses the way the Bible says we should treat total strangers, most marriages would dramatically improve overnight.

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

We offer pre-marriage ministry designed with the purpose of helping couples make biblically informed decisions regarding marriage. If you are seriously heading toward marriage, or simply curious about what the Bible has to say on the subject, this is an excellent place to start. We cover many important relationship topics, including:

- God’s Purpose for Marriage
- Building a Firm Foundation of Faith
- Why We Behave The Way We Do
- Understanding Our Emotions
- Communication in Marriage
- Husband and Wife Roles
- Understanding Forgiveness
- Intimacy in Marriage

Preparing for Marriage is offered as needed, and is taught by any one of our available pastors.

COUPLE’S WEEKEND

Once a year, we seek to encourage and strengthen marriages through our Couple’s Weekend. It is usually held here at Calvary Chapel of Olympia. Dates will be announced both at church and on this website. We always have terrific food and childcare provided. These are wonderful times of fellowship that include worship, special time together with your spouse, and practical teaching from the Word that will truly enrich your marriage.

MARRIAGE MINISTRY

Of all the names given to describe our Lord in the Scripture, one of my favorites is simply, “Counselor” (Isaiah 9:6). The simple truth is, we all need God’s wise counsel, and He promises that when we ask in faith, He will give it generously (James 1:5)! Furthermore, because God has been so generous in sharing His wisdom with us, we now have the privilege and commission to share it with others. As Jesus sent out His disciples to minister to the needs in their world, He reminded them, “Freely you have received, freely give” (Matt. 10:8). In our marriage ministry here at Calvary, we believe this command applies to us as well. Thus, we do not charge money for the ministry we offer.
